Unlearning the tale of the alphabet

In the workshop I will bring a selection of books that show different ways the alphabet has
been illustrated from thoughtful and poetic examples to problematic and outdated ones. We
began the session with a discussion about what the letters mean beyond just sounds, how
language,images, and early learning materials shape our view of the world.
After the discussion each participant was asked to write down the alphabet from their own
mother language. We shared the different letters and talked about pronunciation.
Then, each participant chose a few letters from any alphabet they wanted English or their
own and started to imagine new meanings, associations, and images. They made their own
illustrated letters, using collage, drawing, or writing. Some redefined letters through political
statements, others made gentle or poetic alternatives. The goal is to think about how
language is political, how we can shift meaning, and how we can reimagine the visual
language we are taught.
